Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that can be contracted by unprotected sexual contact. Chlamydia is the most common STD in the Netherlands. In 2011, nearly 13,000 people were diagnosed with chlamydia alone by the GGD. The tricky thing about a chlamydia infection is that it usually gives no symptoms. About 70% of women with chlamydia do not notice that they have a chlamydia infection.
If chlamydia does cause symptoms in a woman, they are usually the following:

  • Increased or changed vaginal discharge
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Blood loss outside menstruation
  • Bloody discharge after intercourse
  • Pain in the lower abdomen

Men with chlamydia usually experience the following symptoms:

  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Secretion from the penis

In the case of a chlamydia infection in the anus, the following complaints often occur:

  • Itching at the anus
  • Pain with the anus
  • Mucous secretion from the anus

The major danger of chlamydia is that the bacteria rises. In women, the bacteria can move to the fallopian tubes and cause inflammation there. This gives serious complaints such as severe pain and fever. Inflammation increases the risk of impaired fertility, infertility and ectopic pregnancies

In men, a rising chlamydia infection can move to the side balls. These are therefore going to ignite. This gives symptoms such as pain, swelling of the ball bag and fever. These inflammations can also lead to reduced fertility.
